Steelhead smolts and juveniles, prior to migration to salt water are opportunistic stream feeders, searching
through the pools, tailouts and undercuts for protein. One of the very special delicacies that the young Steelhead
"key on" are crayfish eggs. These eggs, approximately 4mm in diameter and a mottled brown to dark purple color,
are also a very strong attractant to the adult steelhead returning from the sea to their spawning streams and rivers.
"Key on" may be too weak an expression, adult Steelhead HAMMER THEM !!

Dead Eggs:

Our latest creation: Working with a couple of friends to produce some realistic egg patterns, for "winter fishing"
on salmon spawning rivers, in the interior of  BC, Canada.
Sockeye "Dead Eggs" as seen on the gravel of an obviously migratory spawning stream. These are eggs
that were laid but not fertilized in September:

     So, the challenge was to make/create an egg that is just slightly heavier than water-neutral buoyancy and to
have it looking like "the real thing".

     We've played with hot melt glue several times and were just have not been happy with it. Trying for "real" eggs and our new soft rubber compound seems to have "hit the mark". However, the next step was to somehow create the soft egg with that sort of mottled white and orange look that a fisheries biologist claims is "the key" that makes Rainbows and Bull trout go nuts for them. Sockeye, Coho(Silvers) and Pink(Dog) eggs are about 8mm in diameter, Spring(or King) and Chum salmon eggs are 10 mm and any clues as to what the freshwater trout eggs are in your area? I'm thinking 10mm, with bit of a mottled pink/white color. After many days and evenings of experimentation, we proudly present our "Dead Eggs":
